The record in question is called "Triple Echo".The title comes from an early 70's Oliver Reed film - not "the recurrence of threes in the world of Birdie" as one Japanese interviewer pontificated recently. And it features some really gorgeous gems. The truly tantalising "Such A Sound", "Sidewalk" (which gets its own release as a sin" are just a few of these. But first, a bit of history.....

Debs and Paul first met while she was singing back-up for Saint Etienne and he was playing guitar for the same band.Debs had previously been a member of all girl post-punk band Dolly Mixture while Paul had been in the Heavenly-signed East Village.Once their touring duties with St Etienne were done the pair decided to start writing together and had soon put together their first demos as Birdie, funded by Alan McGee and Jeff Barratt.

Last year Birdie released their debut album "Some Dusty" on It Records ("The Velvet Underground meets French film music", quoth Uncut).
"Some Dusty" spawned rave reviews and a healthy swell of fans for the nascent Birdie. In the US the band released their first single, "Spiral Staircase" through SubPop and, bolstered by a substantial cult following through their former bands - Dolly Mixture's only LP now changes hands for upwards of $200, pop pickers
a short sold-out tour of the East Coast garnered enthusiastic attention from Press and Punter alike.
In other climes Birdie are equally popular - cropping up as the theme music to a drama series in Japan and winning the Polar Award for Best Newcomer in Spain, no less. And this summer the new album "Triple Echo" continues Birdie's ascent.

"Triple Echo" veers from the folk-tinged melodies of "Poster" to the cinerama of "Rosie's Drug Store" and the aforementioned "Such A Sound" and possible reference points could be said to include The Left Banke and The Make Up, with a bit of a Stereolab-esque backdrop thrown in for good measure. Deborah's vocals are dusky and beautiful, occasionally reminiscent of Nico, and we'd be flabbergasted if we were to hear anything more lovely this year.
"Triple Echo" will be released on It Records in June 2001.Full tracklisting runs as follows:
The Original Strand, Poster, Such A Sound, Sidewalk, Rosie's Drug Store, Blue Eyed Son, The Silver Line, Lift Up The Sun, Blue Eyed Son (Reprise), Monday, Hammond, Coda
