THE IDLER
home back ISSUE 29 HELL AIN'T A BAD PLACE TO BE The world's most entertaining and wondrous bog-read THE IDLER returns to the shelves this Christmas with their "HELL" issue. Not as frightening as this might appear at first glance, IDLER 29: THE HELL ISSUE features the extraordinary ramblings of Michael Moorcock on George Bush and Osama Bin Laden, an insight into life on Crass's commune in Essex, John Cooper Clarke's begging letters to his local pub landlord, Alex James on card games, Billy Childish just being Billy Childish, Louis Theroux's Unfinished Jokes, the Worst Xmas Bored Game In The World Ever and shocking and real-life experiences with crap jobs, including - yes, read it and weep - a pig wanker. So not much there then. IDLER 29:THE HELL ISSUE will be released into the arms of a grateful world on December 3rd (just in time for Xmas stocking filler purchases) and retails at only £10. Previous issues have been themed with subjects such as Paradise, Man's Ruin, Retreat and Foolery and have featured ramblings by Ken Kesey, Damien Hirst, Jonathan Ross, Bill Oddie, Patrick Moore, Andrew Loog Oldham, Uri Geller, Howard Marks and... I could go on and frequently do. It’s existence has elicited the maginificent Hamilton-chaser Louis Theroux to comment "I'd read it even if I didn’t write for it" and for Alex James to describe it as "Britain’s coolest magazine" (except it’s a book but you get the picture, he had been drinking). To celebrate the release of IDLER 29: THE HELL ISSUE, the Idler chaps have arranged a two-pronged evening of entertainment on the night of November 30th. This is being billed as A Night Of Leisure and it starts at 6.30pm at the V&A on Cromwell Street in South Kensington SW7 and will star Will Self and Miranda Sawyer in deep conversation (presumably on some central podium and not in the bog or something), deejaying by the Black Box Recorder Disco Militia (that's John Moore and Luke Haines to you), a Pinball masterclass, the easy listening sounds of The Karminsky Experience and (my favourite, this) a Punch and Judy show by Crass's Steve Ignorant. The evening is free although to attend the Self/Sawyer affair it’ll cost you £5 or £3 concessions both in advance (Box Office:020 79422211) and on the door. This, of course, is merely an aperitif before la piece de resistance (ommygod I’ve turned into Basil Fawlty) which is Idler Night at 333 (Old Street). This kicks off at 10pm and will cost you £10 on the door on a first-come first-served basis as no tickets will be made available in advance. Delights at this juncture will include Zodiac Mindwarp and the Love Reaction playing live and deejaying by James Brown (IFG) and Toogood (Renegade Pop). Keith Allen is also threatening to perform "Anarchy In Afghanistan" in his fundamentalist punk guise Johnny Bin Lydon. Disastrous, I'm sure you'll agree. IDLER
